Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan will remain in jail pending investigation into charges of leaking state secrets, a court ruled on Wednesday.
Khan was arrested on August 20 after a court convicted him of violating the Official Secrets Act by sharing a confidential diplomatic cable with the media. He was sentenced to three years in prison, but the Islamabad High Court suspended the sentence and ordered his release on bail on Tuesday.
However, a special court in Islamabad on Wednesday extended Khan’s jail custody for 14 days to allow the investigation to continue. Khan’s lawyer, Babar Awan, said he would appeal the decision.
Khan has denied the charges against him and has accused the government of using the courts to persecute him. He has also called for mass protests against his ouster from power.

The case against Khan is one of several legal challenges he faces since being removed from office in a no-confidence vote in April. He is also facing charges of corruption and misuse of power.
Khan’s supporters have accused the government of using the courts to silence him and to prevent him from challenging the results of the no-confidence vote. The government has denied these allegations.
The case is likely to further polarize Pakistani politics and could lead to further protests. It is also a test of the independence of the judiciary in Pakistan.
The next hearing in the case is scheduled for September 13.
