The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday extended the bail of former prime minister Imran Khan in the Toshakhana case till September 16. The court also directed Khan to submit a surety bond of Rs. 1 million.
Khan is accused of illegally selling a valuable diamond necklace that he had received as a gift from a foreign dignitary and then failing to deposit the proceeds in the Toshakhana, a government treasury for gifts received by government officials.
The IHC’s decision came after Khan’s lawyers argued that the case against him was politically motivated and that he was being targeted by the current government.
The Toshakhana case is one of several corruption cases against Khan. He has denied all the allegations against him.
Supreme Court Questions Toshakhana Procedures
The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Thursday questioned the procedures of the Toshakhana, a government treasury for gifts received by government officials.
A three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial, was hearing a petition filed by Khan challenging the legality of the Toshakhana.
During the hearing, the court asked the government’s lawyer why the Toshakhana did not have a proper record of the gifts received by government officials. The lawyer replied that the Toshakhana was a “traditional institution” and that its procedures were not codified.
The court also questioned the practice of government officials selling gifts received from foreign dignitaries. The lawyer said that this practice was allowed under the Toshakhana rules, but that the government was considering amending the rules to prevent such sales.

The court adjourned the hearing till September 1.
The Supreme Court’s questions about the Toshakhana procedures have raised questions about the transparency of the institution. It remains to be seen whether the government will amend the Toshakhana rules to prevent such sales in the future.
Imran Khan’s Supporters Protest Against Toshakhana Case
Supporters of former prime minister Imran Khan staged a protest in Islamabad on Friday against the Toshakhana case. The protesters gathered outside the Supreme Court and chanted slogans against the government.
They accused the government of using the Toshakhana case to politically victimize Khan. They also demanded that the case be withdrawn.
The protest was organized by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Khan’s political party. The PTI has been holding a series of protests against the government since Khan was ousted from power in April.
The Toshakhana case is a major political issue in Pakistan. It is seen as a test of the government’s commitment to fighting corruption. The outcome of the case could have a significant impact on Khan’s political future.
